Louisiana Bucket Brigade
About this Organization
The Louisiana Bucket Brigade was founded by women leading the fight along the Mississippi River's Cancer Alley, including Margie Richard, Dorothy Jenkins, Shonda Lee, and director Anne Rolfes. Since our inception 25 years ago, we've had a laser focus on supporting fenceline communities - those neighborhoods adjacent to the petrochemical industry in Louisiana. In the current political landscape, these communities are more vulnerable than ever. This moment requires new strategies and new energy, including engaging the young people of Louisiana.
The funds raised on GiveNOLA Day this year will support our new youth summer program in the river parishes. In partnership with Rural Roots Louisiana, this program will create hands-on, experiential learning opportunities grounded in the lived experiences of communities living along Cancer Alley. We will invest in young people by helping them build an expanded understanding of issues, advocacy, and electoral politics. Cultivating and developing an educated, empowered, engaged group of young people from the most impacted places in our region is an antidote to the dysfunction of the current political moment.
