LABB's 25th Birthday BashAs the Volunteer Coordinator at Louisiana Bucket Brigade, I spend my days connecting people to this organization's mission; oftentimes, that means I also get to hear the stories about their personal stake in our work.
Louisiana Bucket Brigade has spent over 25 years standing alongside fenceline communities - the neighborhoods sitting directly next to oil refineries and petrochemical plants. We help residents monitor their own air, amplify their voices, hold polluters accountable, and fight back against an industry that has treated their health as a cost of doing business.
Planting Trees in the Desire Area
What volunteers bring to this work is irreplaceable. Every person who shows up - whether it's to translate French documents for our genealogist, to help at our 25th Birthday Bash or Earth Day Festival, or to plant trees with us - sends a message that these communities aren't alone. That people across New Orleans care what's happening an hour down the road.
In the summer of 2025, the Louisiana Bucket Brigade kicked off our summer youth programming in partnership with Rural Roots Louisiana. Based in Ascension Parish, Rural Roots was formed to engage young people about where we live, what’s at risk, and how to protect our home for generations to come. We were proud to partner with Rural Roots on a youth program that they have named NextGen.
In June 2026, 3rd to 5th graders in St. James Parish will be part of the Next Gen program. The curriculum was developed in collaboration with Inclusive Louisiana, our long-time partner in St. James Parish. We will work with this younger cohort to deepen their understanding of where we live, to connect them to our beloved Mississippi River, and to introduce them to ideas like mapping and why clean air and water matters.
