For more than 40 years, the mission of AM/FM has been to expand community access to radio and ensure a true “voice of the people.” We help communities apply for noncommercial radio licenses and provide the technical, programming, and outreach support needed to bring those stations to life.
Through this work, people and organizations who are often unheard gain the ability to share their stories, build support, and fully participate in a democratic society.
AM/FM has helped build and sustain full-power noncommercial stations in Tampa (WMNF), Dallas (KNON), and Little Rock (KABF), each with large and diverse audiences rooted in their communities.
Eight years ago, we launched WAMF-LP, a 100-watt low-power station in New Orleans serving listeners primarily in the 7th and 9th Wards, continuing this tradition of community-powered broadcasting.
When the FCC opened a new application window for low-power FM stations in 2023, AM/FM provided engineering and technical support to 47 communities seeking licenses. Most of these applications are the only proposals for their areas. In Louisiana alone we supported efforts in Slidell, LaPlace, Shreveport, and Baton Rouge, as well as Gulfport, Pascagoula, Natchez, Vicksburg, and Greenville in Mississippi.
One of these stations, KEUD-FM in Eudora, Arkansas, is already on the air, and another station is currently under construction in Helena.
"Thank you so very much for this beautiful opportunity to be on your radio. This is a blessing. Thank you so much for giving me a voice for Justice." ~ Valerie Jefferson, Women of Action's Women's Caucus
"I love being able to talk about the REAL New Orleans on WAMF." Chris Champagne, Community Organizer
"Our leaders from the lower 9th Ward love doing their shows on WAMF." ~ Beth Butler, director, A Community Voice/ACORN
“People wanting real change and media knowledge can come to the station to access it and learn it. They can reach people who think like they do and need what they need. The station is within itself a community because that is how the station is used to disseminate information to those people who need their kind of insight. So it’s kind of an organizing tool.” ~ Cain KABF, DJ
The Affiliated Media Foundation Movement (AM/FM) exists to amplify the voices of low- and moderate-income working people by building and sustaining community-controlled public radio. Through grassroots journalism and low-power FM stations, we provide trusted, locally rooted coverage of workers’ and immigrants’ rights, health care, housing, education, environmental justice, and community development—strengthening democracy by ensuring the people most affected by these issues are heard.
