$1,000 Goal

For decades the mission of AM/FM has been to support and develop community access to radio. We do so by supporting communities applying for noncommercial radio licenses so there is a "voice of the people." We achieve our mission by assisting in technical support as well as programming and outreach so that unrepresented and underrepresented people and organizations are able to use the radio to express their views, win adherents, be fully participate in a democratic society.

AM/FM has built and supported full-power FM noncommercial stations over the last more than 40 years in Tampa (WMNF), Dallas (KNON), and Little Rock (KABF), which have built large and diverse audiences in these communities. Eight years ago, we received a license for a low-power 100-watt station in New Orleans, WAMF-LP, which broadcasts to an audience largely in the 9th and 7th wards and provides the same service. In 2023, when the FCC allowed new applications for low-power FM noncommercial stations, AM/FM assisted in providing the engineering and technical assistance for 47 different communities. These applications have been accepted for filing and most are the only ones seeking a construction permit. We supported pending applications in Slidell and LaPlace in the New Orleans area as well as elsewhere in Shreveport and Baton Rouge in Louisiana, as well as Gulfport, Pascagoula, Natchez, Vicksburg, and Greenville in Mississippi. KEUD-FM just went on the air in Eudora, Arkansas. These radio stations are tools for empowerment in their communities. They are permanent institutions giving access and impact to everyone.

Mission

The Affiliated Media Foundation Movement (AM/FM) exists to amplify the voices of low- and moderate-income working people by building and sustaining community-controlled public radio. Through grassroots journalism and low-power FM stations, we provide trusted, locally rooted coverage of workers’ and immigrants’ rights, health care, housing, education, environmental justice, and community development—strengthening democracy by ensuring the people most affected by these issues are heard.
