For 14 years, I've worked at Disability Rights Louisiana alongside attorneys and advocates who help people access things that everyone needs but that so many people take for granted: a job, healthcare, an education, the ability to make decisions about their own lives.

DRLA protects the civil and human rights of people with disabilities because people with disabilities still have to fight for independence, safety, and opportunity every day.

Before I started fundraising for DRLA, I built my career working DRLA clients--supporting people with disabilities as they searched for jobs, worked toward financial independence, and rebuilt their lives in the community after incarceration. I've watched so many people show up with tenacity and resilience in the face of obstacles that never should have existed — and I've seen how much it means when someone fights alongside them.

Since then, the need has only grown. Medicaid cuts, legislation to criminalize homelessness, and rollbacks of civil rights protections have devastating impacts on our clients when they get kicked out of school, kicked off their healthcare, and sent into institutions.

Our phones are ringing more than ever, and every call is someone who needs an advocate to fight alongside them.

This GiveNOLA Day, I'm raising $1,000 to help my coworkers continue serving thousands of people each year. Your support ensures my coworkers can answer those calls — fighting to keep people on the healthcare that keeps them alive and in the community, in schools where they belong, and at jobs they need to support their families.
