The Humane Society of Louisiana recently responded to a request for help from the Greensburg Police Department in St. Helena parish. As in many Louisiana parishes, there is no local shelter or animal control agency to assist with cruelty cases. Law enforcement officers originally believed there were 7 or 8 dogs at the property, but more than two dozen severely neglected and mistreated dogs were found at the scene when the search warrant was executed.  Conditions were horrifying throughout the filthy residence. More than a dozen malnourished dogs were found languishing in cramped crates covered in their own filth.. Animals throughout the property were matted and completely urine soaked, some in heavy chains and others wearing tight, thick collars which obstructed their breathing. Some dogs appeared fearful of grass and the outdoors, as if they had never known life outside of crates. Sadly, two of the dogs were found with microchips, but their former owners expressed no interest in coming to rescue them!  Funds raised today will help cover the costs of care and initial vetting for the animals.  UPDATE:  Deputies charged owner Candace Hollins with 21 counts of aggravated cruelty and six counts of cruelty, along with gun and narcotics charges. The judge set her bond at a whopping $628,000 to reflect the seriousness of the crimes.  Thank you for caring and for your support!
