Nearly four years ago, I moved to New Orleans to work with Innocence & Justice Louisiana during my Avodah service year. I was freshly post-grad, looking for meaningful work and melding my passions of justice work and relationship-building. After my year of service concluded, I had the privilege to keep working with this organization, and they've been stuck with me since.
Innocence & Justice Louisiana has existed since 2001, seeking to bring home wrongly convicted individuals in the state of Louisiana, as well as those who have been sentenced to life or near-life incarceration due to draconian laws in our state. Since I've been with the organization, I've seen a whopping 20+ people be released into freedom because of the work of our attorneys, investigators, and so many more. My team and I are there for clients from day one to ensure as smooth a transition back into freedom as possible, as well as to support them when that journey gets tough.
When the State of Louisiana is actively trying to incarcerate more people and hold people behind bars, the work that IJLA is doing becomes even more critical. Beyond working on our cases, we are in the legislature advocating for better policies, educating our neighbors about the realities of mass incarceration, and so much more. Please consider donating to a wonderful organization this Give NOLA day to help our work continue.
