Through the Rebuilding the Boot campaign, Lowlander Center seeks to implement and share information about resilient techniques that can help our communities build and re-build homes and buildings. Started in the wake of Hurricane Ida, which devastated southeastern Louisiana in 2021, this project is dedicated to building a more resilient community that can better withstand storms, saving our homes, our culture, and our Louisiana.
We have, in partnership with faith-based volunteer organizations and local nonprofits, rebuilt 13 homes in southeastern Louisiana since 2023!
One of the techniques we build with is the sealed roof deck, protecting the most vulnerable region of a house from potential water damage. Sealing the roof deck can drastically reduce the cost of repairs.
The work is ongoing; many community members are still waiting and working to return home, even five years after Ida. Resilient housing remains an urgent need.
