NOLA to Angola is an annual solidarity bicycle ride fundraiser that supports the efforts of organizations working to mitigate and reverse the impacts of the U.S. prison system. Biking each mile in solidarity with families who travel long distances to connect with their incarcerated loved ones, the ride educates people about the ways in which mass incarceration works in tandem with other systems of oppression, such as poverty and white supremacy, to harm members of our communities.
All funds raised will go to the Cornerstone Builders’ Bus Project, which provides free monthly transportation from New Orleans and Shreveport for folks to visit loved ones incarcerated in Louisiana prisons.
In my final year of law school, I had the opportunity to work on Mr. Harris' case. Mr. Harris had been living at Angola since he was 17 years old, and was expecting to stay there for the remainder of his life. I drove the two and a half hours each way through BR traffic and winding two-lane highways to interview Mr. Harris and discuss his case several times throughout the year. S/O to the Sonic Drive-In in East Feliciana.
Life at Angola (and life the other pententiaries across Louisiana) is a challenge in itself, and many folks there are serving very long sentences. Being cut off from friends and family by hundreds of miles for many years is just another form of continual punishment. Yet, at the same time, strong relationships are key to reconciling with the past, healing, and moving forward. This was the case for Mr. Harris. Throughout his adulthood, his family members visited as often as they could. Those visits gave Mr. Harris encouragement and hope over four decades of incarceration.
I am supporting Cornerstone Builders’ Bus Project's mission to help keep families connected. Cornerstone Builders’ Bus Project provides a free monthly bus service for New Orleanians who have loved ones in four rural Louisiana detention facilities:
- Louisiana State Penitentiary (Angola)
- Dixon Correctional Institute
- Raymond Laborde Correctional Center (formerly Avoyelles)
- Rayburn Correctional Center
