Ubuntu Village NOLA
About this Organization
Currently we have four core programs:
1. Parent Navigators in the juvenile courts. These peer advocates help families and young people understand the court process, actively participate, and push for alternatives to incarceration.
2. Parent Leaders Educating for Action (PLEA) with families impacted by the juvenile justice system. Currently our Parent Leaders are working on a participatory action research project about what services would most help young people and families involved in the juvenile courts. They also do civic engagement for the betterment of all children.
3. Integration Navigation Services to End Arrests and Detention (INSTEAD) identifies children and adults who are willing and appropriate candidates for the program shortly after an arrest. For those who would otherwise face charges, staff will recommend alternatives to incarceration and prosecution, including restorative justice.
4. NOLA Peace Ambassadors are community members who work to prevent conflicts from developing and intervening in potentially violent situations. They establish trust and credibility via personal ties and use strategies for de-escalation, such as mediation and outreach.
