Sankofa CDC

About this Organization

At Sankofa Community Development Corporation, we focus on sustainable, health-centered development to revitalize the Lower Ninth Ward community of New Orleans, Louisiana. Our major environmental recovery project, the Sankofa Wetland Park & Nature Trail, has successfully transformed 40 acres of once-blighted land into a vibrant environmental, educational, and recreational space. The Wetland Park acts as a natural retention area for surface water to provide relief during catastrophic storms, retaining and filtering 8 million gallons of water. Stretching roughly 2 miles, it features a linear bioretention pond, stands of native tupelo and bald cypress trees, and habitats for a variety of wildlife, fish and 80 + bird species. The Wetland Park exemplifies the multifaceted benefits of urban wetlands and green infrastructure. It is a living model for resilient nature-based solutions, neighborhood revitalization, and the restoration of our natural environment. The Sankofa Wetland Park hosts ecological and outdoor recreation activities that promote mental and physical health through engagement with walking trails, fishing spots, and communal gathering spaces for everyone to enjoy.
