The New Orleans Shakespeare Festival at Tulane is a cornerstone of classical theatre in Louisiana and the Gulf South, offering professional productions and unmatched educational outreach. Each summer, our acclaimed season of plays brings Shakespeare's timeless works to the stage, while our dynamic educational programs ignite a love for theatre in thousands of middle and high school students-many experiencing Shakespeare for the very first time. We're also proud to be one of the largest employers of theatre professionals in New Orleans, supporting a vibrant local arts community.
Support Shakespeare in New Orleans! Our 33rd Season includes King Lear by William Shakespeare, directed by Jana Mestecky. Our second mainstage production is Macbeth by William Shakespeare, directed by Graham Burk.
In January 2027, we will bring back Macbeth for our Performance For The Schools Series. This Series annually performs for over 5,000 students across the Gulf South and is many students first time seeing live, professional theatre.
On last season's production of A Midsummer Night's Dream:
"The entire production was done very well from the actors, the director, the set, the lighting and the costumes... My wife wanted to say that the play within the play was funny, delightful and the best use of that set of scenes that my wife has ever seen in her experiences with the Midsummer Night’s Dream productions! It was sparkly, increased our level of happiness and was a truly delicious performance!"
"This was a great performance. I’ve seen Midsummer’s Night Dream in the past. This performance was the best."
"I had attended opening night and was so impressed I wanted my grandchildren to see this production. I brought them and enjoyed watching their reactions."
"The level of talent is unsurpassed."
On last season's production of The Imaginary Invalid:
"The play was amazing, the French spirit was there, the subtle jokes. The translation was excellent, and the acting was great. This performance should go national. Very well done!"
"The actors were supreme and it was so well done."
"I enjoyed how fresh and relevant the play was even though it was written in the 17th century."
"The quality of the acting was just incredible."
The mission of the New Orleans Shakespeare Festival at Tulane is to produce professional, classical theatre with a primary focus upon the works of William Shakespeare. Our commitment is to utilize local, national, and international talent to create dynamic, visceral, text-based performances celebrating Shakespeare’s brilliant insight into the human condition. With this programming we will provide to the people of the Gulf South both entertainment and educational resources of the highest quality, honoring Shakespeare’s legacy.
Founded in 1993 by several Tulane Faculty members, the Festival has become one of the most significant theatre companies in the Gulf South. Each season typically consists of two mainstage productions, various lagniappe events, and our acclaimed Peformance for the Schools educational program. Programming is also taken to schools in the greater New Orleans area to awaken new generations to the power of language and literacy through live, professional performances of Shakespeare’s plays.
