Green Light New Orleans
About this Organization
Green Light New Orleans (GLNO) began in 2007 as a grassroots initiative to help residents save energy and reduce their carbon footprints by replacing incandescent light bulbs with energy-efficient CFLs. Through this program, GLNO has distributed more than 600,000 bulbs in 27,000 homes.
Today, we are known for our beautiful rain barrels.
In 2015, we identified flooding and subsidence as a significant community challenge, and developed the Rain Barrel Program in effort to empower residents to capture rain water as a local solution. Rain water capture allows for use of captured water for non-potable uses, relieves local flooding issues, and reduces the burden on the stormwater management system. To date, about 3000 rain barrels have been installed at residences throughout the city. Our barrels are up-cycled food grade barrels obtained from food service partners, diverting a significant amount of non-recyclable plastic from our local waste stream.
GLNO relies largely on volunteers for the success of it's programs and participant referrals for engagement, demonstrating the capability to create meaningful environmental change through collective community action and empowerment.
