The Backstreet Museum is dedicated to helping preserve and present African American parading and street culture in New Orleans, Including Jazz Funerals, Mardi Gras Indians, Skull and Bone Gangs, Baby Dolls and all other forms of masking and parading.

The Backstreet Cultural Museum offers a unique view into some the most sacred and influential African, Afro-Creole and African American cultural retentions in the United States. Within museum's collection holdings are over 500 films created by the Mr. Sylvester Francis the creator and director of the Backstreet. The film content ranges from Jazz Funerals, Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, Skull and Bone Gangs, Mardi Gras Indians, Baby Dolls and other black masking traditions.

Mission

The mission of Backstreet Cultural Museum is the Preserve the history of Mardi Gras Indians by telling the true meaning of their Culture. To keep Jazz Funeral traditions active & Alive , To support the fund & history or Social aid & pleasure clubs Second lines , to support Brass Band musicians, babydolls , Knewe Clubs, etc. and all Culture bearers that dedicate their time to preserving and archiving the knowledge of these organizations. Further more our mission is to carry legacy of Mr. Sylvester Francis , by photographing , recording, collecting , preserving an archiving history and keeping the doors opens at Backstreet so the community can have a place to display their Art and we tell the stories. ate their time to preserving and archiving the knowledge of these organizations.
