The Backstreet Cultural Museum offers a unique view into some the most sacred and influential African, Afro-Creole and African American cultural retentions in the United States. Within museum's collection holdings are over 500 films created by the Mr. Sylvester Francis the creator and director of the Backstreet. The film content ranges from Jazz Funerals, Social Aid and Pleasure Clubs, Skull and Bone Gangs, Mardi Gras Indians, Baby Dolls and other black masking traditions.
The mission of Backstreet Cultural Museum is the Preserve the history of Mardi Gras Indians by telling the true meaning of their Culture. To keep Jazz Funeral traditions active & Alive , To support the fund & history or Social aid & pleasure clubs Second lines , to support Brass Band musicians, babydolls , Knewe Clubs, etc. and all Culture bearers that dedicate their time to preserving and archiving the knowledge of these organizations.
