Algiers Charter School Association

ACSA was founded in 2005 as a community-based response to the urgent educational needs following Hurricane Katrina. The organization was established by a nonprofit board of Orleans Parish School Board members and neighborhood representatives to provide returning families with essential educational options. From its inception, ACSA has been dedicated to serving the needs of the Algiers community, providing a culturally responsive, community-led education model that prioritizes student success across college, career, and life.

ACSA started with a commitment to ensure that students from underserved and economically disadvantaged backgrounds had access to high-quality education. Over time, the organization has grown to operate two schools: Martin Behrman Charter School (MBCS) for grades PK-8 and L.B. Landry High School (LHS) for grades 9-12. The organization’s focus on trauma-informed practices, career and technical education, and culturally responsive teaching has allowed it to evolve in response to the specific needs of its students and community. Today, ACSA remains deeply rooted in its founding principles, continuing to support students and families while adapting its programs to meet the demands of an ever-changing educational landscape.
