The English-Speaking Union employs the English language as a catalyst to foster global understanding and good will by providing educational and cultural opportunities for students, educators and members.
In order to fulfill our Mission, the New Orleans Branch conducts the following activities and programs in our community:
1) The Annual National Shakespeare Competition for high school students, paying for the regional semi-final winner's travel expenses to New York City, to compete in the final competition. This is in affiliation with Tulane University who will be offering a Shakespeare Clinic to area NSC participants in January of 2027. This clinic will be funded with support from the New Orleans Branch. In 2024, the winner of the New Orleans Branch competition, Malachi White of Covington HS, won the ESU's National Finals.
2) The English Teach and Learn Abroad scholarship program (TLAB), to attend advanced summer programs at Oxford University, the University of Edinburgh and the Shakespeare Globe-London.
3) The ESU Happy Hour lectures on topics of interest, which are offered to members of all branches.
Funds raised during GiveNOLA Day 2026 will be dedicated to the expansion and future workshop programs associated with our annual National Shakespeare Competition, the Tulane Shakespeare Clinic, the ESU Happy Hour lectures, and the TLAB programs.
