PLAAY South New Orleans

About this Organization

PLAAY South New Orleans (PSNO) serves as the Deep South hub for Dr. Stevenson's violence prevention PLAAY intervention. PLAAY uses basketball and other competitive games alongside culturally responsive strategies to teach children in-the-moment skills necessary to self-regulate and navigate conflict and stressful encounters to safer and healthier outcomes in the classroom, the community and on the court.

In this critical era, PSNO recognizes the growing gaps in services in social, emotional and behavioral supports for young people in schools and communities. We are committed to stepping up and filling those gaps.

PSNO facilitates PLAAY groups and trains educators, coaches, and mentors to facilitate groups and to implement PLAAY strategies in school and community settings. PSNO provides structured workshops for educators and families on managing racial stress and building self-advocacy skills.

Since 2018, our New Orleans partners have observed positive growth. PLAAY participants have demonstrated increases in academic engagement, self regulation , better decision-making and decreases in physical aggression and suspensions (Stevenson, H.C., 2002)(Center for Resilience, 2023).
