Northshore Community Orchestra
About this Organization
The Northshore Community Orchestra (NCO) was founded in 1987 as the Slidell Youth and Community Orchestra as part of the Clearwood Junior High School community education program. This program was ongoing for 30 years and was sponsored by the Saint Tammany Parish School Board. In 2017, the school board policy changed, and the orchestra was required to become a separate, autonomous non-profit organization.
When COVID spread through the city and state, we were unable to practice and perform. Once we could practice again, we had no place to practice. Then thankfully, Father Ed. from St. Margaret Mary Church and School and the Archdiocese of New Orleans came to our rescue. We now practice in the St. Margaret Mary School gym. We perform free concerts in Slidell, LA in the Municipal Auditorium and in the outside venue of Heritage Park.
Our jazz ensemble plays each year in the Mardi Gras parade in Covington as well as at the Arts Evening in Slidell.
"Who is in the orchestra?" The musicians in the orchestra are from all walks of life. We have students, civil servants, doctors, veterans, and many others. The youngest member of the orchestra is 7 years old and the oldest is 76.
