$5,000 Goal

Layaya's mission is to make the arts and art education a vehicle for expression and success for young people of all ages while teaching the responsibility and accountability necessary for successful adulthood. We believe that access to resources, mentoring, a strong peer support network, encouragement and education support young people in creativity and expression which is vital in the growth of positive development into young adulthood.

2025 brings us to our biggest project yet with a large building that we have decided to turn into what we call LAYAYA C3 (Creative Community Center). The building was formerly the Plaquemines Parish Lock Up (jail) built in 1970 and has operated as such until December 2023. Just 2 days after they vacated, we stepped into the space to start the task of transforming the building into a one-of-a-kind creative community center that will "unlock" opportunities for the young and the young at heart in our community! This is a big undertaking but will result in an amazing space where youth and people of all ages can come to create, learn and have access to resources. As an all-volunteer organization that is funded through donations, fundraisers and artist generated income it is our goal to raise the funds needed to be able to continue the renovations. Access to substantive arts and cultural experiences enriches the quality of life for both residents of and visitors to the greater New Orleans region. The arts foster civic engagement, stimulate economic activity, and increase cultural empathy, and thus play a crucial role in sustaining thriving communities.

Testimonials

Layaya does great work in the community. They are providing opportunities and activities for the young and young at heart at the only creative community center of this kind in the area. In just one year they have logged over 340 days of activities and community events with an all-volunteer staff!

Mission

LAYAYA (Louisiana Young Artists & Young Authors) exists to inspire creativity, build confidence, and empower youth through accessible, hands-on experiences in the arts, culinary, science, and storytelling. Through year-round programming, LAYAYA serves hundreds of youth annually, providing consistent opportunities for creative expression, skill development, and mentorship—while strengthening community connection and celebrating the culture of Plaquemines Parish.

At LAYAYA Imaginarium, our mission is to provide a safe, inclusive, and inspiring space where youth can explore creativity without limits. Through year-round, hands-on programming in visual arts, culinary arts, theater, music, and STEM, we serve hundreds of youth annually—many of whom return session after session—building consistency, confidence, and long-term growth.

Participants develop measurable skills in creative expression, collaboration, and problem-solving while gaining real-world experience through performances, exhibitions, and community-based projects. LAYAYA also provides mentorship and leadership opportunities, with students progressing into volunteer, internship, and teaching roles—contributing thousands of community service hours each year.

Rooted in the culture and spirit of south Louisiana, LAYAYA strengthens community connection by engaging families, partnering with local organizations, and ensuring access —so that every child has the opportunity to imagine, create, and thrive.
