The Institute of Utopian Hospitality (IUH) is a New Orleans–based economic equity lab working at the intersection of climate resilience and community well-being. We merge environmental stewardship with the holistic lens of Gross National Happiness (GNH) to prototype a future where the city’s infrastructure and social fabric are inseparable.
IUH focuses on functional climate adaptation—not just conservation. Through initiatives like our Powering Your Life workshop series and the cultivation of native plant landscapes, we equip residents with hands-on skills to navigate a hotter, wetter future while strengthening local ecosystems and food systems.
Grounded in GNH principles, we measure success by psychological well-being, health, and cultural vitality alongside economic growth. To us, hospitality is more than an industry; it is a model for how a city can care for its people, especially its most vulnerable neighbors.
IUH acts as a living lab for scalable climate solutions—from modular energy storage and community-led manufacturing to urban farm development. These initiatives replace fragile, centralized systems with resilient, distributed networks grounded in local ownership and collaboration.
New Orleans sits at the forefront of intersecting challenges: energy poverty, food insecurity, and coastal erosion. IUH responds by co-creating systems that engage residents at every step—from design to implementation—building dignity and capacity through participation. Our goal is both simple and transformative: to move beyond temporary fixes toward a self-sustaining model where climate-ready infrastructure is a shared right, not a privilege.
The Institute of Utopian Hospitality is an economic equity lab transmuting community disenfranchisement into agency and hope. We advance community-based climate adaptation in New Orleans through the physical development of housing, food, and energy sovereignty. By merging technical design thinking with the restorative principles of Gross National Happiness, we move beyond advocacy to establish permanent, community-owned infrastructure that empowers frontline residents to thrive.
