About this Organization
Through the generosity of the State of Louisiana, the Emigrant Support Programme of Ireland, The Gayle and Tom Benson Charitable Foundation, the Mayor's Neighborhood Engagement Office, the New Orleans Hash House Harriers, the Lakefront Management Authority and community members, the LHC completed construction of on an Irish History Plaza flanking the Celtic Cross Monument in Hibernian Memorial Park. A bluestone walkway features six interpretive panels tracing the rich and compelling history of the Irish in New Orleans. The panels contain archival photographs, historic newspaper clippings, maps, graphics and text to help bring to life the multi-faceted story of the Irish of the Crescent City.
The next phase of the park is an expansion on the south side of the 4-acre site that will further commemorate and honor the city's Irish. Phase II will explore the contribution of the Irish of New Orleans to the city's vibrant culture, including links to music, food and celebrations. Hibernian Memorial Park commemorates the enduring connection between Ireland and New Orleans. With additional sidewalks and lighting the park provides an opportunity for socialization and learning in Lakeview.
