The Green Project

A nonprofit organization

Serving New Orleans since 1994, the Green Project's mission is to promote a culture of creative reuse by diverting usable materials from landfills and cultivating respect for their value. We do this through three main pathways: Our Donation-based Salvage Store, Community Paint Recycling Program, and free K-12 Environmental Education. 30 Years and Counting! 2025 GiveNOLA donations will support our Youth & Community Garden Project as well as all of our programs and initiatives to reduce waste. Read more about it below!

The Youth & Community Garden Project will be geared towards environmental education programming to provide new interactive ways to explore and showcase reclaimed materials. The garden project will also serve as a workshop space for youth and community participants interested in learning more about recycling, nature, and sustainability.

The Green Project's Salvage Store diverts two million pounds of usable materials from the landfill every year. We collect and sell items at roughly 30-50% of retail value, allowing us to provide affordable building materials to our community. Our Paint Recycling Program was the first of its kind in the Gulf South and each year, we divert 40,000 gallons of paint or more from improper disposal in local ecosystems and from unnecessary incineration. The Green Project's recycling efforts help to keep our waterways clean and provide a method to continue using durable paint. We provide free hands-on environmental education to K-12 schools, engaging students in thoughtful dialogue and critical problem-solving relevant to school standards, and to the city they live in.
