Avodah

About this Organization

Avodah's Jewish Service Corps places young Jewish adults, 21-26 years of age, in a year of full-time service at antipoverty organizations in New Orleans. Our Corps Members work on issues like education, environmental justice, health, homelessness, and criminal justice, while building a vibrant Jewish community rooted in justice. During the year, Corps Members live together as a community and participate in weekly educational programs to deepen their understanding of domestic poverty and explore their work through the lens of Jewish tradition, regularly facilitated by local experts, educators, and leaders. Avodah began in 1998 with nine young Jews in Brooklyn, and has since expanded to Washington DC, Chicago, and New Orleans. Since Avodah's founding, the Jewish Service Corps has added $25 million of cumulative staffing capacity at our placement organizations and supported the lives of nearly 1 million individuals working to make ends meet. Since Avodah came to New Orleans in the wake of Hurricane Katrina in 2008, we have been inspiring and training Jewish leaders dedicated to tikkun olam, and promoting a vision of Jewish life rooted in justice.
