The 1881 Institute

A nonprofit organization

The 1881 Institute (1881) - named after the year the Tuskegee Institute was founded - is a nonprofit, workforce development initiative that prepares underrepresented populations for engineering careers through education, certifications and on-the-job-training.

1881 provides young-adults, 16 to 24 years old, with the support services necessary to transition into growing advanced manufacturing careers. The support provided includes workforce training, academic-tutoring, scholarships, tuition-assistance, transportation, book-vouchers, career counseling, and internship-placement. Currently, 1881 is running a Bridge program that seeks to train 30 young people in carpentry related fields as a pathway to engineering careers.
