The Promise of Justice Initiative

Fundraiser Story
I work at the Promise of Justice Initiative as their narrative storyteller. The work we do is transformative for many people. We have exposed forced labor practices in Louisiana, worked with survivors who believe in restorative justice, and elevated the voices of people directly impacted by the criminal legal system. PJI is the only organization I know that combines storytelling with direct representation of people incarcerated, civil litigation, and policy work. Storytelling allows us to understand the roots of the systems that impact us today and elevate the voices of people most impacted by those systems. With that knowledge, we recognize that we can build a different world. We are currently working on a documentary about Jim Crow Juries in Louisiana and a documentary on the hospice program at Angola Penitentiary and what it means to die in prison. Your contribution allows PJI to continue to rewrite narratives that perpetuate mass incarceration and harm our communities.

About the Organization
Promise of Justice Initiative fights for the dignity, freedom, and autonomy of those targeted and touched by the criminal legal system and for an end to mass incarceration.
We are building a better world -- a world where justice means a legal system that embodies an ethos of transformation, restoration, and safety, and values community, family, dreams, and joy as part of Black life and all life. We believe that a better world is possible. We believe in the promise of justice.
