As a parent, you worry about a lot of things. Are they hitting their milestones? Did they have too much screen time today? Are they reading enough? Are the foods I am feeding them healthy enough? Is this fever too high? Do they have clean underwear to wear to school tomorrow? One thing that no parent should have to worry about is if they can afford to be at their child's bedside during a medical emergency, such as a stay in the NICU (Neonatal Intensive Care Unit). Saul's Light exists to support NICU and bereaved families through comprehensive resources and compassionate care. One resource in particular, the NICU Family Fund, is focused on covering cover basic needs throughout a NICU stay, including transportation, food, and lodging. In 2024, Saul's Light served 218 NICU and bereaved families in the state, and the NICU Family Fund provided $19,469 in cash assistance to families. Saul's Light helps New Orleans families navigate the trauma of the NICU journey and supports them through infant loss, ultimately improving perinatal outcomes. Pairing direct support for NICU families with advocacy at the provider, facility, and state levels to address disparities in care, experiences, and outcomes, Saul's Light is working to build a world in which all parents and babies experiencing a NICU stay or infant loss receive equitable, dignified, and evidence-based care as well as the support they need to have the best possible mental and physical health outcomes.
