My college journey has its precursor and continuation in my hometown of New Orleans, where my six years and counting of engagement at Grow Dat Youth Farm has shaped my understanding of leadership and inclusivity. Serving first in a variety of paid roles and now within a leadership role as a member of the Board of Directors, I’ve honed my ability to communicate across differences, create space for diverse voices, and use my platform to amplify others. Through discussions, workshops, and feedback, my peers and advisors there taught me to build relationships based on mutual respect with the understanding that no matter the circumstances, we can always learn from each other. At Grow Dat, I also found a space to embrace my identity as a queer woman. These lessons in mutual empathy and collective growth in community building continue to influence how I approach leadership.

Grow Dat Youth Farm is an education-centered nonprofit that cultivates the leadership potential of New Orleans area young adults, ages 15-24, through five different leadership programs. Our organization's mission is to nurture a diverse group of young leaders through the meaningful work of growing food. Through our educational initiatives, sustainable farming practices, and inclusive organizational culture, we contribute to a more equitable New Orleans.
