Early in the spring of 2006, in the aftermath of Hurricane Katrina, a small group of New Orleanians came together with a singular purpose. The City of New Orleans had begun the process of selling the land within the Lafitte Corridor-a former transportation right of way- for private development. We thought that the community should have a voice in determining the future of this land, and we were convinced that it held tremendous potential for rebuilding a healthier, more sustainable city. In 2013, this commitment bore fruit with the opening of the Lafitte Greenway. Today, the Lafitte Greenway Partnership continues that mission, ensuring that the community is engaged in the work of growing the Greenway as a great public space for all New Orleanians.
