Food Distribution and Mobile Pantries: The Food Distribution program provides more than 30 million meals annually through local food pantries, soup kitchens, shelters and other nonprofits. Mobile Pantries deliver fresh food to clients living in food deserts - urban and rural areas where supermarkets are scarce.
Disaster Response: Disaster response is a core part of Second Harvest's mission. We prepare year-round so we can respond immediately when a disaster strikes. Last year we responded to four natural disasters, including the devastating August floods and recent tornado in New Orleans East, delivering nearly 2 million pounds of food, water and supplies to people in the impacted communities.
Child Nutrition: The School Pantry, Kids Cafe, Summer Feeding and Backpack programs reach hungry children after school, on weekends, and during school holidays. By bridging the meal gap that exists when school meals are not available, we are ensuring the most at-risk children are well-fed and able to grow, learn and achieve. We serve thousands of children every day at more than 60 schools and youth programs.
Nutrition Education: Second Harvest is providing the cooking, nutrition education, and food budgeting skills people need to lead healthy, happy, and productive lives. Our education programs offer hands-on nutrition, gardening, cooking and shopping classes to help participants make healthy and affordable eating choices.
Client Services: Our Client Services team works with thousands of people each year to help them access resources that give them a better chance at escaping poverty. Our staff assists clients who need help applying for SNAP and services such as Medicaid, LACHIP, health care referrals, tax filing, legal aid and child care.
