We help keep life from falling apart. When a single court date can determine whether a family stays together or falls apart, justice shouldn't depend on your wallet.

Louisiana has one of the highest poverty rates in the nation. Half of those living in poverty here — tens of thousands of families — rely on our legal service partner, Southeast Louisiana Legal Services (SLLS), when their lives are on the line. Your gift funds the lawyers standing between them and disaster.

Think about what it means to face a domestic violence situation with no legal advocate. To be wrongfully evicted after a hurricane with no one to argue your case. To be a veteran — someone who served this country — navigating a civil legal system alone, without the resources to get the benefits they've earned.

These aren't abstract statistics. They are neighbors, parents, children, and veterans across Southeast Louisiana — and SLLS is often the only thing standing between them and the permanent, life-altering consequences of a legal system they cannot afford to navigate on their own.

Your donation directly funds:

  • Free legal representation in family law, domestic violence, landlord-tenant disputes, disaster recovery, and veterans legal issues — the cases that keep lives from unraveling
  • The Veterans Justice Fellowship — a prestigious program serving the 1 in 4 New Orleans area veterans who are low-income and facing unmet civil legal needs

Testimonials

Overall, the VJF has reached 7,416 veterans, veterans' family members, veterans' caseworkers, and veterans' advocates since its inception and has opened 740 cases for veterans through March 31, 2026.

Former Active Duty U.S. Navy Reserve Veteran and U.S. Army Sergeant Veteran YN2 Harris was dealing with the challenges of worsening glaucoma and chronic pain from a back injury when she was denied for disability benefits. NOBF's Veteran's Justice Fellow in the VA Medical Center secured updated medical records for YN2 Harris, which resulted in the successful reconsideration of her application. YN2 Harris is now approved for backdated benefits and her monthly benefits. This financial relief empowers Ms. Harris to prioritize her health, providing peace of mind and paving the way for a more stable and secure life.
